GWA welcomes groups of students to the workshop in the large Shipbuilding shed on the NDSM wharf. Each child gets to work there themselves with the large printing presses, the screen printing facilities and the bookbinding facilities. You will learn all about the history of printing: How were books made in the past? What is an etching process? How do you make a lino print, or a stencil?

GWA works with elementary schools, secondary schools, colleges, community centers and after-school programs. For each age group we devise an appropriate workshop or course. Always a customized course, taking into account the size of the group, the level and the core objectives that your school or institution is currently working on.

For grades 4 through 8, the education team developed lessons in the various graphic techniques. Drypoint, linocut, bookbinding, silkscreen and letterpress: Whether you want to take your class on an individual lesson in the workshop, seek a themed lesson on crafts/cultural heritage, or have a series of lessons at school – it always starts with a good conversation in the workshop! Download the Education Brochure, or stop by the workshop and meet our enthusiastic team of teachers.

Some sample lessons:

Make your own book!
Half of the class will begin by printing covers, the other half by sewing a book block. After an hour, we switch techniques. When finished, we crease and fold the whole thing together so that each student has their own little book.

Amsterdam, my city
Design and print a poster with a message for everyone about Amsterdam: what makes this city so beautiful? Gouge a real Amsterdam house, print a ring of canals together, and combine it with a slogan to create a cool poster.

Medieval Printing
Design and print a pattern with stencil printing or screen printing, or your own knightly coat of arms using the dry-needle technique.

Download the Education Brochure, or request it by email! You can also drop by the workshop.

Our offer is also on the new offer-site of Gemeente Amsterdam: Andersom.Amsterdam

Note: GWA is a provider of the Culture Card: as a school you have a budget per student that you can use with us, among others.
