GWA enjoys collaborating with other creators. Onder de noemer ‘& Inkt’ ontstonden de afgelopen 20 jaar projecten met theatermakers, kalligrafen, dichters en (digitale-) letterontwerpers. Heb jij een goed plan, dat je graag samen met de werkplaats zou willen uitvoeren? Laat het ons weten!
GWA & Inkt is een serie projecten waarbij GWA kruisbestuivingen aangaat met andere (kunst)disciplines. GWA werkt samen met dichters in Poëzie & Inkt, met Eye Filmmuseum voor Film & Inkt, met de Toneelbibliotheek in Theater & Inkt, met Paulien Cornelisse tijdens Paulien & Inkt en met Tjitske Jansen in Schrijvers & Inkt.
At Vinyl&Inkt, singel-packaging-bag collector Frits Jonker told us about his (fascinating) obsession, and as part of Buurt&Inkt, we went into the Indische Buurt with small rolling presses and visited libraries, community centers and all the other parties we were welcome to attend.
Het grootste programma tot nu toe is 3D & Inkt. Met als uitgangspunt de vraag: hoe zouden we de modernste print-techniek met de oudste (boekdruk) kunnen verenigen? Het simpele antwoord ‘door het maken van nieuwe letters’ bleek zo simpel nog niet. Want waarom zou je een fysieke, al dan niet houten letter willen maken van je digitale font? We vroegen het Typecrit, een groep letterontwerpers. Het eerste project dat eruit kwam was Typewood (verderop op deze pagina), vervolgens bracht Lara Captan ons de Kanat – een Arabische houten letter.

Master seeks Apprentice
Master Seeks Apprentice is a project to train “young printers” in letterpress, relief printing, intaglio and bookbinding. The apprentices take part in classes, special workshops and learn all about working with and maintaining the presses, ink and paper. With the mission of being able to transfer the knowledge themselves as teachers and/or administrators in these or other workshops. In 2025 a course will start for the 3rd time.
From January through September 2025, GWA has space for three new creators. Are you a designer or artist with a graduate degree from an art school? Do you have a heart for craft, heritage, but certainly also for education? Are you between 25 and 55 years old and do you speak (sufficient) Dutch? We invite you to send in your portfolio!
The course consists of basic techniques and master classes in typesetting, bookbinding and etching, and a module focused on didactic knowledge.
There is no cost associated with the program. We ask for your time, and a commitment. At the end of the track, we hope to offer you a place as a workshop assistant, administrator or assistant teacher.
GWA Notes You
GWA Grafische Werkplaats Amsterdam exists twenty years in 2024. Founded as Grafisch Werkcentrum Amsterdam by Wiek Molin and Martin Veltman, and growing ever since, thanks to the efforts of so many enthusiastic teachers and volunteers. And we are celebrating! By giving the people of GWA – the designers, printers, teachers and volunteers – all the attention they deserve, and of course by letting the visitor enjoy it to the fullest.
Every month we present a new notebook, whose cover is printed and designed by one of the creators or creator-friends of GWA. Such a notebook consists of 48 pages of beautiful opaque paper, part of which is printed, a kraft cover, space for a pen or pencil and bound together using a binding method devised by one of our bookbinders. Everything in this project revolves around, well, however fashionable the word: connection. Because thanks to the collaboration of all these different minds, GWA can still be GWA. Inspiring, welcoming and challenging.
Typographical Diary
A real diary, made of paper, ink, wooden and lead letters. We combine the old techniques with the very latest: the letters and shapes are not only made of lead and wood, but also of resin, plywood and many other materials. Printed page by page on the 1910 Johannisberg Stop cylinder press, in a limited edition. The diary is hand-bound.
NDSM Print Market
The printers-market at GWA | NDSM PRINT, initiated by Claire van der Mee and Lauren Esquires – two screen printers with an eye for beautiful work and parties. We always have that too, so here we go again! On Saturday, December 7: A happy market featuring only handmade printing, in and outside GWA’s workshop. Be welcome to come browse, look, buy, have a beer, and maybe dance. There will also be IJhallen (flea market) in the shed that weekend. Welcome to the yard.
